The Unity Gallery (along with Unity Design's offices) is located at 19 Harries Road Marshaltown and is a hub for many city artists, of all varieties. The gallery itself host regular fine art exhibitions, featuring work from new and established city artists. Then there's AfriCan and Unity's many craft products, many of them made from the ring pulls - the tops of tin cans. The Gallery also hosts regular recording sessions with Liber8 Records and BKO, and has also hosted many spoken word events in its day. Run by Robyn Field, Edna Phiri (administration) Irene Mdebuka (craft production) and Patrck Mabena (craft prodcution and design), the gallery is a place for city artists to come and pursue art as a career. Unity represents many artists, selling there work at the gallery, promoting artists and selling to corporate clients. |
Meropa has been a stand out figure on the Joburg streets arts scene for several years already. Born and raised in Soweto's Zola region, he has developed a unique style and brand of music that mixes traditional themes and idioms with a hip hop ethos and the undeniable pull of a solo acoustic guitar.
